How to install Volvo Vida/Dice on Windows XP VMWare Player

I can confirm that Volvo VIDA 2011A will work in Windows 7 (Ultimate, BTW). But with the following conditions. You need to run IE8 not 9 (I have found that VIDA just won't go with 9), minimum RAM is 2G. Should be good to go with that; but since MSSQL, which VIDA requires is such a hog, other conflicting apps could create issues. Volvo obviously recommends that a VIDA box be used exclusively for that purpose with no other apps installed. Realistically, I have also installed MS Office, Adobe Acrobat and Lightroom, and some Nikon software without creating a problem.
Actually, running a VM is maybe a good solution to avoid collision with other parts of the installed software. As you know, a VM is like a dedicated computer with nothing else installed on it. Another benefit is to use it on your newish computer which is faster (of course VM will steal some performance but I've noticed no problems with VIDA level software which is not a very demanding software)
VM also adds a little more clunkiness on UI having to swing between 2 windowing/operating systems and deal with assigning the mouse+USB inputs between the 2 operating systems. But its not too bad really. Once inside VIDA, one is staying there to work for awhile.
My setup is a 2008ish Macbook Pro (not fast by today's standards) with VirtualBox Windows XP VM. I run both VIDA DICE and Toyota Techstream (for our Prius) on the VM with no problems. I actually just leave the VM always up and running so its like having my car diagnostic computer available all the time.
This said, VM does require a little more computer skills for setup. Probably about the same skill level to solve interference with other software installs. For someone with less computer skills, it seems a dedicate computer running Win XP is probably the easiest fool proof path.
Here is what I would do: Get VMWare Player (Free http://www.vmware.com/products/player/), which is a virtual machine software. VMWare Player does not allow you to create new virtual machines, just open previously made ones.
Next, find a Windows XP Professional VMWare image. This is more than just an install disk - this is a full already installed image of XP Professional SP3.
Open the XP image with VMWare Player, boot XP in your virtual machine, and install VIDA on that. You need to connect the USB DICE through to the Virtual Machine, see the help/tutorial to learn a little about VMWare player.
The huge advantage of this method is everything dealing with VIDA is completely isolated into that virtual machine. Thus you don't need to worry about what else you have installed that will mess up vida, viruses hidden in any of the SW you've acquired, etc. The only thing you are installing on your main PC is VMWare Player, which is very trustworthy.
You can even enter full-screen mode, which will make it seem like you are running the real XP.
The whole process should be very painless & simple, the only thing you are missing right now is a VMWare Image of XP Professional. If you want you can try installing XP from the installation disk you already have using VMWare Player, which requires a bit more work, see e.g.:http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2005/10/26/vmware-player-windows-xp.html .
-Colin
PS: VMWare Workstation (basically full version of player) is excellent SW, I've used it for many years now in a variety of environments. So I would have no hesitation using the player edition, but I honestly haven't tested the above with VMWare Player only. The Microsoft VM that comes with Windows 7 is a joke by comparison.

(Review) Volvo VIDA/DICE 2014D Windows 7 32bit: 100% OK

A couple of weeks ago the car suffered a spurious DIM fault which left me with a SRS alarm standing. Unsure of what faults may be laying in wait and in order to clear the SRS alarm, I ordered a VIDA/DICE unit from this site:
I know that VIDA/DICE is a big issue on the forum and has been covered many times, but I wanted to put down my experience while it is still fresh in my mind, and that it may help any out there who are struggling or are wondering whether to get a unit or not.
Once I got the VIDA/DICE unit I set about looking at the numerous posts that had been put on various forums, and I realised immediately that this was not going to be as easy as most software / hardware you buy off the shelves. However. my first challenge was to find a laptop with Win 7 professional on it. Luckily my son had a large desktop / laptop with it on and he let me do a fresh install and update. I then followed a YOUTUBE video for installation. (No instructions came with the device at all).
Following along, I got Volvo VIDA 2014D installed OK. I then rushed out to my car to try it out. When I plugged the DICE into the computer it searched for the drivers and eventually recognized the device. I then started VIDA, but it would not see the DICE unit. Just a box with a Red X in it.
OK so back to the forums to see what people did about that. I must have tried innumerable combinations of things and I was about to give up. As a last ditch effort I dug out an old Toshiba Laptop I had. This only had Vista Home Premium on it, but it was a 250GB drive, 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core DUO processor (P8600) which was way below the spec of my sons laptop, but adequate for VIDA. I searched on the WEB for the cheapest WIN 7 professional license I could buy and got one.
I loaded the 32 BIT version as this is all the laptop could cope with. Followed some of the tips I had picked up on the forums, and loaded VIDA back up again. I went out this morning in the pouring rain to try and connect it to the car - hey presto - it worked. I have checked and cleared down the faults, including the SRS alarm. I am a very happy man. So below is the setup I used which worked for me and I hope it helps someone else out there who has been struggling.
  1. I purchased a VIDA / DICE unit with the latest 2014D software. The VIDA unit has multicoloured lights on it. I had read on the forums that there were some out there with only Blue Lights and seemed to give problems.
  2. Use WIN 7 professional 32 Bit and let windows do a full update (takes ages). You will certainly need to ensure that service pack 1 is installed. When mine was loaded and updated, it only had Internet Explorer 8 on it. I had to download and install IE9. VIDA 2014D would not load with only IE8 in place.
  3. Download the latest version of JAVA
  4. At this point I created a restore point in windows, so I could revert to this point should I have problems installing VIDA.
  5. I then turned off User Account Control (UAC) and disabled the Windows Firewall.
  6. Check that the only version of .net that you have is .NET 3.5. I had read that if you are on version 4 VIDA doesn't like it. (You can check the version in the registry editor in Windows)
  7. I then loaded VIDA following a Youtube video
  8. Once VIDA was proven to work, I then took the laptop out to the car and connected the DICE unit to the OBD2 socket and plugged it into the laptop. Windows searched for the drivers and installed them. When I opened VIDA up, I needed to enter all the car details in the Vehicle Profile section. This time the page also showed my DICE unit in the DICE configuration Box. With the vehicle details entered, the Diagnostics TAB activated and as long as the Ignition is in the II position, it will read all the onboard computers.
Why didn't this work for me the first time I tried it? I think it might be that VIDA / DICE didn't like the 64Bit version of Win7 Pro, although others may have got it working on that platform. I also think I got in a mess with the .net 3.5 vs the .net 4.5.
My thanks to all those on various Forums who have posted up their solutions. Most are for earlier versions of VIDA, and I didn't see many for the 2014D version that I bought.
It has been a long week messing around with this, but I am currently walking on air.
One final tip - while messing around with VIDA 2014D on the car the ignition is on. I would put the battery charger on while in this state as the battery soon runs down. I'm currently waiting for it to charge up so I can start the car!!!
Good Luck!!

How to start and login to Volvo VIDA 2014D with multiple languages

It’s aimed to make it easy to start and login to Volvo VIDA DICE 2014D with multiple languages.
VIDA 2014D PREREQUISITES:
- You need to have followed my "How to install Volvo VIDA 2014D on Windows 10" and have that up and running:
GUIDE:
To switch between two (or more) languages you need to change the language preferred by the user that logins to VIDA 2014D. These users are admin, 1, 2, 3 or 4 depending on your market. All these users get the language set by the patch that you installed earlier. To change the language you need to use OSQL.EXE to change the "AccessServer" database setting "Users""fkLanguage". I have created simple shortcuts to a batch file for you to run, to change between English (US), Swedish, Spanish, French and Polish in this example package.
A. Unpack the "set_fkLanguage_v2.7z" to C:\VIDA\ and it will unpack in "C:\VIDA\set_fkLanguage".
B. After you have unpacked the files, move the shortcut icons (VIDA en-US, VIDA sv-SE, VIDA es-ES, VIDA fr-FR, VIDA pt-PT) that corresponds to the languages that you have installed, to a preferred location of yours, e.g. the desktop.
C. To run VIDA DICE software in Swedish: double click the shortcut "VIDA sv-SE", to run VIDA in English (US): double click the shortcut "VIDA en-US" and so on.
D. Wait for the VIDA icon to turn green (it is in the task tray by the clock), then double click it to open VIDA in IE.
E. If you start VIDA 2014D by other means than the custom shortcuts, it will start with the last language used until you change it again with the custom shortcuts.
For those who want to use this package for another language not included:
- You need to copy one of the *.sql files, rename it to e.g. "de-DE.sql", edit the line to LanguageCode='de-DE' in that file, save it and then run it with this example from a command prompt (or create a new shortcut to it with the switch "de-DE" without the quotes after the target):
set_fkLanguage.cmd de-DE

How to install Volvo VIDA 2014D on Windows 10 Pro x64

It’s a how-to guide to install Volvo VIDA 2014D on first and foremost Windows 10 Pro x64 but will work on most Windows 7, 8, 8.1 (32- and 64-bit) and up, especially on a system where VIDA has previously failed to install or a previous version of VIDA has been installed and then uninstalled. On a system such as that, the cleaning part step 1 through 8 is the most important part.
Usual errors on such systems are:
- An X is presented in Internet Explorer were the DICE Communication tool selector should be.
- You cannot enter anything in the Username login dialogue.
- "VIDA cannot start as port 80 is already in use".
- "VIDA NOT OK".
Check the troubleshooting section at the end of this guide for solutions.
REQUIREMENTS:- Microsoft Windows 10 Pro x86/x64 - I strongly recommend that you move to Windows to 64-bit. Especially if you are planning upgrading to SQL Server 2016.
- Volvo VIDA 2014D DVD or ISO-file
- VIDA Patch (2014A.exe works for VIDA 2014A through 2014D). File details:
2014A.exe 137 KB (140 785 bytes)
CRC32: E5F6F31C
MD5: 4E8084C08BDC59CB7D4DA16E708CDD8B
SHA-1: 4A1A38ECBF4608F7E36FDB38867F3A03D96D1B4C
GUIDE:If you have a clean install of Windows and have not previously installed any version of VIDA or SQL (failed or not): begin in this post with step 9.
On a system where VIDA has previously failed to install or a previous version of VIDA has been installed and then uninstalled, the cleaning part step 1 through 8 is the MOST IMPORTANT part, you will find that pre-install guide here:
http://blog.obd2france.com/2016/09/20/how-to-clean-up-a-previous-version-of-volvo-vida-2014d/
STEPS 9 THROUGH END, INSTALLING SECTION:9. Prepare your installation and download necessary files:
9a. Create a temporary directory in C:, and name it "VidaInstall". Continue with either x86 or x64 steps depending on your OS installation. x86 works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but I STRONGLY recommend you to follow the x64 steps on 64-bit Windows because this guide ASSUMES that you do.
nn_x86: This step is for Windows 32-bit. Skip this step if you are on Windows 64-bit.

- The installation of SQL Server will run by itself without any user intervention. Wait until it is complete and then close the Command Prompt.
10. Optional step: Make sure Internet Explorer 11 is installed via Control Panel: View by: Small icons, "Programs and Features", select "Turn Windows features on or off" and make sure Internet Explorer 11 is checked (which is the default in Windows 10).
11. Optional step: If you do not want the automatic download of .NET Framework 3.5 during the installation:
- Go to Control Panel, open "Programs and Features", click on "Turn Windows features on or off".
- Check the box for ".NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)" (if it is not already checked) and then click OK.
12-15. Steps removed.
16. Install VIDA from the VIDA 2014D DVD:
16a. Step removed.
16b. Locate VIDA Setup (setup.exe) in "D:\Install\DVD\Vida_dvdheader\Main" (NOT the setup.exe in the Vida folder) (substitute D: for your actual VIDA DVD location), right click the file and select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows 7" from the drop down list, then click OK.
16c. Now run the "setup.exe", still in the Main folder.
- Select VIDA All-in-one and then the language(s) to install. (WARNING! You cannot install another language after you have upgraded SQL!) (For a multi-language setup, first follow this guide and then my "VIDA Multi-language Guide").
- Leave the default Destination folder as is (C:\VIDA\) and click Next.
- Accept the License Agreement.
- If the installation asks to download .NET Framework 3.5, select to "Download and install this feature". After the downloading and installing is done click Close.
- When the Vida Configurator shows up, leave the default selection on the Location tab as is, which is "Internet", (do not change anything on the other tabs) click Save and then Close, Close.
- WARNING! If you get an "Unhandled Exception" during Multi-language setup, see the Troubleshooting section at the end of this guide BEFORE you continue!
- When Setup asks for a reboot, select "No, I will restart my computer later" and then click Finish.
- If Windows Firewall Security Alert shows up for "Java(TM) Platform SE binary", tick both "Private networks" and "Public networks" and click "Allow access".
16d. To fix an incompatibility issue with this old Java version that comes pre-installed with VIDA and Windows Update "KB3163018" (and also pre-installed with Windows 10 v.1607) you need to update Java:
- Uninstall all Java versions (if not already done so).
16e. Make sure that VidaMonitor and Java are closed (they will be started only if you have installed multi-language, but check to make sure anyway): Start Windows Task Manager and click "More details". Locate and right click "VidaMonitor.exe" on the "Details" tab and select "End task", confirm by clicking "End process". Do the same with java.exe and javaw.exe. Close Windows Task Manager.
- Close Internet Explorer.
nn_x86: This step is for Windows 32-bit. Skip this step if you are on Windows 64-bit.
nn_x64: This step is for Windows 64-bit. Skip this step if you are on Windows 32-bit.
16f_x86. On Windows x86 do the following:
- Install: C:\VIDAInstall\JDK7u80\jdk-7u80-windows-i586.exe
- Rename "jdk" folder in "C:\VIDA\" to "jdk.old" (or delete it).
- Copy folder "jdk1.7.0_80" from "C:\Program Files\Java" to "C:\VIDA\".
- Rename folder "jdk1.7.0_80" in "C:\VIDA\" to "jdk".
- Uninstall "Java SE Development Kit 7 Update 80" and "Java 7 Update 80" from Control Panel Programs and Features, you do not need it anymore as all the files VIDA uses we have already copied.
16f_x64. On Windows x64 do the following:
- Install: C:\VIDAInstall\JDK7u80\jdk-7u80-windows-x64.exe
- Rename "jdk" folder in "C:\VIDA\" to "jdk.old" (or delete it).
- Copy folder "jdk1.7.0_80" from "C:\Program Files\Java" to "C:\VIDA\".
- Rename folder "jdk1.7.0_80" in "C:\VIDA\" to "jdk".
- Uninstall "Java SE Development Kit 7 Update 80 (64-bit)" and "Java 7 Update 80 (64-bit)" from Control Panel Programs and Features, you do not need it anymore as all the files VIDA uses we have already copied.
17. Now it is time to install the VIDA Patch (2014A.exe -- check the size or better yet the MD5 or SHA-1 under Requirements in this guide above, to match. You might otherwise have downloaded a virus), the same Patch works for VIDA 2014A through 2014D:
17a. Make sure that VidaMonitor is closed: Start Windows Task Manager and click "More details". Locate and right click "VidaMonitor.exe" on the "Details" tab and select "End task", confirm by clicking "End process". Close Windows Task Manager.
nn_x86: This step is for Windows 32-bit. Skip this step if you are on Windows 64-bit.
nn_x64: This step is for Windows 64-bit. Skip this step if you are on Windows 32-bit.
17b_x86: Now it's time to run the VIDA Patch, the same Patch works for VIDA 2014A through 2014D. "2014A.exe". Run it as Administrator and leave the default Destination folder as is (c:\) and select Install. Ignore the taskkill error. Now skip to step 18.
17b_x64: Do NOT try to install it by running the exe, instead use Z-zip to unpack the compressed files directly to C: (running it will not always work with this setup and will sometimes not patch the installation correctly).
17c_x64. Right click and select "Extract files..." Enter C: in the "Extract to" field and untick the "2014A\" path.
17d_x64. The package will extract to the VIDA-folder, overwrite all files when asked.
17e_x64. Locate the file filldb.cmd in the "C:\VIDA\patch" folder and then right click on it, select "Run as administrator". You will briefly see a CMD-prompt that opens and closes quickly, this is by design and no other confirmation will appear.
18. Now apply the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 Express Service Pack (KB2979597 - a prerequisite for the SQL 2016 upgrade):
18a. Open a Command Prompt: Click Start and enter "CMD", then right click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator". A new CMD-prompt will appear. Copy the following line depending on your architecture and then paste it by right clicking in the CMD-window and select "Paste", then hit enter:
- For Windows x86: (substitute D: for your actual VIDA DVD location))
Code:
"C:\VIDAInstall\SQL2008R2SP3\SQLServer2008R2SP3-KB2979597-x86-ENU.exe" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ALLINSTANCES /HIDECONSOLE /ENU /QS
- For Windows x64:
Code:
"C:\VIDAInstall\SQL2008R2SP3\SQLServer2008R2SP3-KB2979597-x64-ENU.exe" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ALLINSTANCES /HIDECONSOLE /ENU /QS
- The upgrade of SQL Server will run by itself without any user intervention. Wait until it is complete and then close the Command Prompt.
18c. Reboot.
19. If Windows Firewall Security Alert shows up for "Java(TM) Platform SE binary", tick both "Private networks" and "Public networks" and click "Allow access".
20. Now you should be ready to try VIDA out, but wait for the VIDA Monitor to change to a green play icon (VIDA Monitor is by the task tray):
20a. Connect your DiCE-device to your computer.
20b. Start VIDA All-In-One
20c. If Internet Explorer ask to use Recommended security and compatibility settings chose "Don't use recommended settings".
20d. If Internet Explorer asks permission to enable Several add-ons, click Choose add-ons and Enable both 'Adobe PDF Link Helper' and 'WebCGMHlprObj Class'. If Internet Explorer only asks permission to enable 'WebCGMHlprObj Class' click "Enable".
20e. Login with admin, 1, 2, 3 or 4, depending on your location/market.

Volvo VIDA DICE 2014D TROUBLESHOOTING:PROBLEM: An X is presented in Internet Explorer were the DICE Communication tool selector should be (this happens after a Windows upgrade).
SOLUTION: Locate on your VIDA DVD the directory D:\Install\Utils (substitute D: for your actual VIDA DVD location) and the file "EnableIEHostingx64.reg" and merge it with the registry by double clicking on it and then select "Yes" and "OK". For x86 systems do the same with "EnableIEHostingx86.reg"
PROBLEM: You cannot enter anything in the Username login dialogue.
SOLUTION: You have not applied the patch correctly, do step 17 again and then reboot.
SOLUTION 2: Install the patch the "old way":
1. Make sure that VidaMonitor and Java are closed: Start Windows Task Manager and click "More details". Locate and right click "VidaMonitor.exe" on the "Details" tab and select "End task", confirm by clicking "End process". Do the same with java.exe and javaw.exe. Close Windows Task Manager. If Windows Firewall Security Alert shows up for "Java(TM) Platform SE binary", tick both "Private networks" and "Public networks" and click "Allow access".
PROBLEM: "VIDA cannot start as port 80 is already in use".
SOLUTION: Uninstall or disable any services you may have installed that uses port 80, usually Web-servers. IIS may be the culprit: Control Panel/Programs and Features/Turn Windows features on or off - Internet Information Services.
PROBLEM:
Could not load file or assembly 'BizServices.VehicleImageRepository, Version=2.0.5394.27556, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
SOLUTION: NONE YET  I ended up cleaning ALOT of stuff in Windows followed by a Windows "repair upgrade". After that, it worked. This is the file it says it cannot find:
"C:\VIDA\jboss\standalone\deployments\VidaEar.ear\V idaWeb.war\Diagnostics\BizServices.VehicleImageRep ository.DLL"
Same error shows up in a working VIDA environment if you temporary rename or remove BizServices.VehicleImageRepository.DLL.
PROBLEM:
During Multi-language installation, in some cases, this error will appear while trying to install second language:
Unhandled Exception Error Number: 0x80004005 Description: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Login timeout expired Setup will now terminate.
SOLUTION:
- Select OK and then prepare to be greeted by the infamous "VIDA NOT OK" message.
- Select "Yes, I want to restart my computer now."
- After the reboot, make sure that VidaMonitor is closed: Start Windows Task Manager and click "More details". Locate and right click "VidaMonitor.exe" on the "Details" tab and select "End task", confirm by clicking "End process".
- Now re-run setup, again select VIDA All-in-one, and then select only the additional language that you tried to install when it failed (it is probably already selected -- I here presume that you tried to install an additional language to en-US).
- When Setup asks for a reboot, select "No, I will restart my computer later." and then click Finish.
- Now continue to follow my guide from step 16d.
PROBLEM: Other problem.
SOLUTION: Other problems can often be solved by starting over and go through the steps 1 through 8 and not skipping them in my guide. Print out the guide on paper and do a check mark for the things you have already done to make sure you are not missing any crucial point.
